Podcast #34 – 07.09.11 A Blackclassical Mix
When Black Classical drops a jazz mix, we tend to take note. When he sends us an exclusive (we think) and includes a note saying this is his final jazz mix, we simply can’t ignore it. For those of you who don’t know the man, his record collection is smarter than your average bear. If you’re lucky, a search on the interweb will bring you hours of carefully curated selections of deep, modal, righteous and spiritual music, most often than not out of print and rare as hen’s teeth. The tribute he recorded for John Coltrane’s birthday last year was epic, as are his two Sun-Ra specials, both essential for those seeking the low down on the man Ra. A little Elvin Jones, Rene Bloch, Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra and a full on conga stomper of Tito Puente all feature alongside a whole host of killer jazz business. Whether this turns out to be his last foray into jazz who knows, but savour it and make sure to check out the other mixes he blessed us with in our archives. Thanks for listening.

September at The Jazz Meet
So we’re still hanging out at The Shoreditch every Sunday throughout September despite our makeshift stage being no more and the new DJ booth taking up more real estate (Great for the DJs, less so for the bands!). Looking on the bright side though, what we do now have is an abundant seating area for passing trade which has genuinely lent our little Sunday live shows an incredibly intimate vibe. Can’t fit the drummer in? Well stick him where the sax is and Jake can go sit next to one of the punters ha! Seriously though, since the changes took place, we’ve had a bumper series of events which really have been ace! Highlights include raising just over £750 for MacMillan Cancer Support (A big thank you to all who donated) at our charity fundraiser,  all the ensuing DJ sets from the day which you can check out here (and which are an amazing six hours of music – even if we do say so ourselves) and making someone’s dream come true as our resident trombonist Oliver Nelken, took some time out during one of the intervals to give a boy from the audience an introductory lesson on playing the trombone. That’s what we’re talking about, bringing Jazz back to the community and hopefully inspiring a few people along the way!
So we now head into the Autumn months and our September sessions. If last Sunday’s opener is anything to go, then we’re in for another great month. The Jazz Meet Band absolutely killed it with a three-piece brass section with DJs Nik Weston and Huw72 supplying the interval jazz treats (And we have to say at this point, Huw absolutely tore up his jazz sets last Sunday. Proper respect on that one).
So with no further ado, here’s the rest of this month’s line-ups with each resident DJ taking up one Sunday afternoon each to welcome some heavyweight guest DJs / collectors into the fold. This month’s guest band slot comes from occasional Jazz Meet drummer (and one-time LTJ Bukem live collaborator, fact fans – putting the drums on this drum and bass classic )  Killian Madden who will be assembling a full on jazz funk project alongside singer/guitarist Alix Anthony (Last seen at our old Favourite Things residency at Favela Chic sometime ago!). Promises to be a pretty special one!
We hope you can join us at some point to enjoy some exceedingly great live jazz and Latin flavoured music (Even if we do say so ourselves.
