So with May just around the corner, let’s take a quick look back at some of April’s highlights at Floripa. We welcomed performers Heidi Vogel and Al Scott onto the Jazz Meet stage for two brilliant guest gigs and the house band continued to wow the crowds with some seriously killer sessions (particularly now we’ve welcomed our boy Francesco Mendolia back into the fold on drums!). We’ve got more surprises up our sleeve for May but before then let’s dip into a few of those videos… The Jazz Meet Band, April 1st… The Jazz Meet Band and special guest Heidi Vogel and Dudu Marques on drums revisit ‘Mas Que Nada’, April 8th… The Al Scott Trio supply ‘Northern Smiles’, April 22nd… But video of the month has to go to photographer and film maker Irven Lewis who dropped in on April 15th and filmed this tantalising black and white short.
Another great mix for you this week, this time around from Vesa Yli-Pelkonen of Helsinki, Finland. Aside from his work as an environmental biologist, Vesa has also been digging great records, DJing and running club nights for years and is best known for the Wahoo! night held at the legendary Umo Jazz House from 2001 to 2007 and then at various other venues in Helsinki. Currently he runs the monthly Big Shake night alongside Sampsa Vilhunen (the other Wahoo! buddy), whose great jazz mix you can still find here. This mix takes you first to the fascinating jazz sounds of the 1950s, when 78rpm records were still largely produced alongside the new format called microgroove vinyl records which then slowly but surely replaced the 78s. From the 1950s we jump to some serious late 70s / early 80s jazz grooves – some of Vesa’s favourites. For more great selections from

Just in time for the weekend, the Jazz Meet resident and MUKATSUKU label boss drops a little 30 minute mix of killer jazz music for your listening pleasure. Dipping into the hard-bop bag straight off with some Blue Mitchell before hitting us with a cheeky 45 from Eddie Russ and a perennial favourite in Ahmad Jamal’s remake of WAR’s ‘The World is a Ghetto’. Hampton Hawes drops off the beautiful David Axelrod produced ‘Sierra Morena’ and we get some mellow jazz flute vibes Germany’s Sunbirds. We then head off to Norway for a little bit of 80’s Brazilian flavoured club jazz from Winds, Hot & Cool and some ace fusion grooves from Direct Flight before rounding everything off with the epic vocal jazz dancer from Jeanette Williams and Vince Andrews ‘The One Who Needs You’. So BIG! Thanks for listening, if you’d like to cop the mix as an MP3
