This week we are proud to present another mix from Adrian Leach of the much celebrated Happy Jazz Radio Show. If you checked his last effort for us back in June of last year you know this particular gentleman doesn’t mess about when it comes to his selections. For this session Adrian has put together a scintillating sample of jazz from South America (an area of the world that his radio shows consistently specialise in). There is lots of rareness to be uncovered so delve in to experience plenty of Fender Rhodes moments, fusion touches, haunting vocals, cosmic synths and stinging brass and above all, great musicians that rarely get the exposure they deserve. Check the mix and please do not overlook this vast array of talent any longer. Thanks for listening and, of course, if you do enjoy the tunes, make sure to drop some pleasantries below in the comments
Terry Callier (May 24, 1945 – October 28, 2012) “I never had a more wonderful live music experience than seeing Terry Callier at the Jazz Cafe. It was like being in church (in the best way), a genuinely moving spiritual experience, an overwhelming calm, peaceful atmosphere and a music of profound beauty, of positivity and a love for humanity, exquisitely sad yet with a gentle smile. Bless that noble statesman of soul. The great Terry Callier. Rest In Peace.” Jessica Lauren, October 2012 May you rest in power, sir. We’re hoping to pay tribute to the great man this coming Sunday at Floripa.
Who says Jazz is dead? Well if it is, the guys over at Label Love today might have just proven the naysayers wrong. After previously compiling 4 volumes of free new music from some of the world’s greatest labels, for the fifth they’ve concentrated their efforts on the jazz genre to unleash 15 nostalgic jazz classics, unreleased gems, and exclusive selections from the vaults. Highlights include the cosmic wonders of Matthew Halsall’s ‘Fletcher Moss Park’ (taken from the recently released album of the
Ahead of his appearance at The Jazz Meet this Sunday, we thought we’d delve into yet another DJ box… this time around it belongs to Ravin Ragnauth AKA Raggy. We’re pretty certain that if you know your onions, you’ve come across Raggy at some point during your musical journey, and if not, then let us enlighten you now to his talents. The host of the already 100 episode deep Off Limits Radio Show and a heavyweight record collector in his own right, the enthusiastic South Londoner has been an ardent supporter of independent musicians and producers ever since he picked up his first twelve inch many moons ago. It all started back in the early-Eighties, when listening to radio stations like Radio Invicta, Solar Radio, Horizon and LWR, Raggy got hooked on the jazz bug, and while most of his school friends ventured down the electro path, he coveted the music
Out of the shadows, comes that man Black Classical again with another jazz mix. We call it ‘jazz’ but as you may know by now his style truly transcends what most would call a ‘jazz mix’. What you get here is an oft challenging, sweeping selection of modality, spirituality and percussive rhythms underpinned by high tempo grooves that keep things moving in the right direction. This man is deep. Just check the tracklist for proof of that and for further notes on the records from the man himself check below. There really isn’t anything else we can say. If you endeavor you will be rewarded. For more Black Classical goodness, check his M4L-FunCt10n’D Mixcloud, our own archives here and, also, his work over at the most excellent Word is Bond website.
