WATCH: Omar Takes To The Open Road With Kairos 4tet
The award-winning Brit jazz outfit enlist the voice of Omar Lye-Fook MBE on latest track ‘Song For The Open Road’
Fresh from ending his own musical hiatus with the release of his stunning new single, ‘The Man’ on Freestyle Records, the UK soul sensation and tour de force that is Omar subsequently pops up on this new track from saxophonist and composer Adam Waldmann’s highly acclaimed Kairos 4tet project.
With the seeds of a collaboration initially sown back when Waldmann and Omar met after Kairos were named Best Jazz Act at the 2011 MOBO Awards, the fruits of that labour can now be fully enjoyed some 18 months later as the video for a new track (entitled ‘Song For The Open Road’) is finally unleashed to the public. Omar’s usual butter smooth baritone complements the Kairos’ adventurous take on contemporary jazz, a sound underpinned by Jasper Høiby’s masterful bass and Waldmann’s oft-understated sax. Jon Scott (drums) and Ivo Neame (piano) complete the quartet while usual co-conspirator Swedish vocalist, Emilia Martensson also lends her own delightful tones to the song. Shot by Rupert Friend, who also devised the lyrics, the video is a suitably atmospheric companion piece to the music and will no doubt raise anticipation of the new album ‘Everything We Hold’, to be delivered by Naim Jazz Records on 10th June and available to pre-order now via Amazon (where you can also preview short clips of the rest of the LP). Take a listen to the full track below and let us know what you think.
