Ahead of his appearance at The Jazz Meet this Sunday, we thought we’d delve into yet another DJ box… this time around it belongs to Ravin Ragnauth AKA Raggy. We’re pretty certain that if you know your onions, you’ve come across Raggy at some point during your musical journey, and if not, then let us enlighten you now to his talents. The host of the already 100 episode deep Off Limits Radio Show and a heavyweight record collector in his own right, the enthusiastic South Londoner has been an ardent supporter of independent musicians and producers ever since he picked up his first twelve inch many moons ago.
It all started back in the early-Eighties, when listening to radio stations like Radio Invicta, Solar Radio, Horizon and LWR, Raggy got hooked on the jazz bug, and while most of his school friends ventured down the electro path, he coveted the music of Judy Roberts, Atmosfear and Freeez. As he got deeper and deeper into finding the records he just had to own, his record collecting kicked up a gear in 1992 and as it stands today, his extensive collection holds a wealth of obscure and elusive gems just waiting to be rediscovered.
Having previously held down weekly radio shows on both Solar Radio and (the now defunct) soul24-7.com, you can now hear Raggy drop these tracks in his Off Limit Radio shows, which are available as a podcast via his own personal website or as a stream via the Off Limits Radio Show Mixcloud. As you’d expect, the shows showcase  a wide spectrum of musical styles, ranging from rare independent jazz from the 1960s and 1970s through to private press soul, new jazz, weird downtempo obscurities and Brazilian funk, as well as the new music being released today (as we all know, that particular wheel never stops turning – there’s always something new to pick up!).
However, if you like your RARE jazz, his regular “Sack Full Of Dreams” shows are the ones you just HAVE to catch, as it’s these episodes where he really digs DEEP to bring you the vinyl-only goodies he’s been sourcing on the quiet for years. Do yourself a favour and check at least this one out!
Of course, before he entertains us on Sunday, we thought it only customary that he gave us five tracks that have proved influential to him over the years. Here’s what he had to say…
