Ahead of this Sunday’s Cal Tjader Special at Floripa this Sunday, we present a selection of covers from the Latin Jazz master’s extensive discography. A veritable force in the jazz domain, Mr Tjader touched on a number of jazz styles throughout his career, always progressing his sound and surrounding himself with a team of expert musicians including Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, Clare Fisher and Herbie Hancock. Right here they are all present and correct blending straight ahead, Latin and jazz funk into a heady brew. There’s a touch of Fender Rhodes, a few tasty Latin morceaux and if you’re into deep percussive business head straight to the 30 minute mark for some proper jazz dance bangers. We finish with a delicate version of the John Coltrane’s classic ‘Naima’. Take a little listen today and if you want more, join us at Floripa this coming Sunday for a masterclass in Cal Tjader’s back catalogue both live on stage from Jessica Lauren and Orphy Robinson, and from the DJ booth!
