The first Jazz Meet cloudcast of 2011 compiles a few of our favourite releases from the past year. It’s not conclusive, as you’ll notice a fair few of the year’s higher profile artists missing. Hopefully we can rectify that with a second cloudcast later this month.
Here, we focus on the more contemporary side of things, kicking off with Ukranian jazz outfit Dudko Quintet, and follow with new material from The Dave Holland Octet and The Cookers (Billy Harper, Eddie Henderson, Cecil McBee et al). A collaborative effort from Talib Kibwe, Bobby Few, Sangoma Everett and Louis Petrucciani eases us down a notch, before James Tatum and The Lloyd Miller Trio (both released/reissued on Jazzman Records last year) swing us into spiritual territory. Gregory Porter provides a killer bit of vocal jazz while Porter Records supply a gorgeous (recently reissued) track from Finnish maestro Eero Koivistoinen. Gondwana’s Nat Birchall and Japan’s Masa Sextet (produced by Patrick Forge) round off the mix.
