In preparation for this week’s Jazz Meet Live event at The Shoreditch, E1 we drop a cheeky guest mix from one-time Mukatsuku collaborator and London cratedigger/DJ Marlon Celestine. Marlon will be joining resident Nik Weston behind the decks for an evening guest spot on Sunday and as a taster, he dropped this into our inbox.
A peep at the tracklist will give you a flavour of what’s in store – a veritable feast of funky jazz, jazz fusion and oft-sampled obscurities. Peter Herbolzheimer kicks things off with the ever so funky ‘Catfish’, before the tension builds on David Axelrod’s dramatic ‘Holy Thursday’. Jose Feliciano, Burt Bacharach and Dave Pike step up with a selection of their finest works before Charles Mingus’ raucous take on ‘Moanin’ hits home hard. An Aretha Franklin vocal and a Madlib rework follow before Steely Dan and Howard Roberts provide a pair of hip hop sampled classics. A forgotten gem from the Acid Jazz era rounds the mix off on a funky foot. Thanks for listening.
