Phil Levene of Eclectic Jazz provides the next mix in our series before he joins us at The Shoreditch, E1 this coming Sunday for a guest set alongside resident Nik Weston and The Jazz Meet Band. Here’s what he had to say about the mix in his own words.
“Starting of the mix in a calm fashion with Das Goldene Zeitalter featuring the lovely vocals of Bajka before hitting some wonderful fusion from the mid 70s from Michal Urbaniak along with the unique vocal stylings of wife Urszula Dudziak. From early last year it’s The Rhythmagic Orchestra with a spirited version of Nina Simone’s ‘African Mailman’ which brings us nicely to Tino Contreras’ fast bongo bop from 1961 and into a great new Jazz-dance tune by Japanese group Primo. Going back to the 70s fusion sound with Peter Fish and vocalist Jay Clayton (Reissused in 2009), it’s then back to the 60s with the last two numbers; the heavyweight swing tune from Marion Brown and the potent sound of Eric Dolphy.”
