A mixed bag this week as we dip into the crate to bring you another eight selections of killer jazz business. Jazz master Archie Shepp kicks off proceedings with a righteous bit of Cal Massey composed deepness (Shout to Roamin for the request back in December!). The scintillating gospel stylings of Max Roach’s ‘Joshua’ take over before another Cal Massey penned tune takes flight in the form of Freddie Hubbard’s take on ‘Assunta’. Two piano led tracks follow with a rare Japanese trio date from Cedar Walton, Billy Higgins and Sam Jones, and Mary Lou Williams’ ‘Praise The Lord’, off her ‘Zoning’ LP. Classic 70’s material from Roy Haynes and Gato Barbieri with Lonnie Liston Smith round off the mix before a personal fave in ‘Parallex’ from Raices closes us out. Enjoy.
