Another great mix for you this week, this time around from Vesa Yli-Pelkonen of Helsinki, Finland. Aside from his work as an environmental biologist, Vesa has also been digging great records, DJing and running club nights for years and is best known for the Wahoo! night held at the legendary Umo Jazz House from 2001 to 2007 and then at various other venues in Helsinki. Currently he runs the monthly Big Shake night alongside Sampsa Vilhunen (the other Wahoo! buddy), whose great jazz mix you can still find here. This mix takes you first to the fascinating jazz sounds of the 1950s, when 78rpm records were still largely produced alongside the new format called microgroove vinyl records which then slowly but surely replaced the 78s. From the 1950s we jump to some serious late 70s / early 80s jazz grooves – some of Vesa’s favourites. For more great selections from Vesa, check out Wahoo! on Samurai.fm.
