Back in the Summer of 2008, a then fledging digital record label known as TrebleO, helmed by Dominic Stanton AKA Domu and Dave Farlam AKA Shift, brought us this little gem of a jazz EP from The Sub Ensemble. It was one of only a few releases that the Birmingham jazz collective, fronted by bassist Chris Mapp, would release under the guise despite another tune ‘Humans’ being featured on a 4hero Extensions album around about the same time. The label soon sadly closed (as Domu retired from the music business) and although it appears Chris has pursued other projects since, The Sub Ensemble slowly disappeared from sight. Until now.
Fast forward four years and the Two Hungry Ghosts has deemed it fit to shine a spotlight back on the EP again. And this time’s there’s absolutely no reason to sleep on it as it’s currently being offered up as a free download via the website’s Soundcloud account (We have it on good authority it’s all legit so no need to feel guilty hitting that download button), so go ahead and stream the four songs below and make your choices. It’s a quality EP that aside from a few CDs being pressed up and handed out at live shows never made it to physical form, which is a shame as tracks like ’22 21′ and ‘Beautiful Spring’ are fine examples of the type of contemporary jazz that was being made at the time and still sound fresh today. The only thing missing from the original release is the Domu remix of ‘Faster Is The Sun’ which is a Latinesque broken beat monster of a record and can still be acquired from the usual channels.
