Ahead of our bumper Easter Sunday special at Floripa with Heidi Vogel and The Jazz Meet Band last Sunday, we thought we’d reach out to our brother from another Ennio Styles, and ask him to contribute the next in our mix series. And he doesn’t disappoint, dropping off this little 50 minute opus dubbed ‘Morning is the Time for Jazz’. Beginning with the orchestrated musings of Miguel-Attwood Ferguson and the pensive ‘Interstellar Low Ways’ from Planet D Nonet, Ennio dips into classic jazz dance (‘Let the Sun Shine In’), vocal jazz (‘Setho’), contemporary jazz (‘Kyrie’ and the mesmirising ‘Chinese Fishing Song’) before unleashing a sea of deepness. Nate Morgan, Pharoah Sanders and Salim Washington follow before Keith Brown hits us with an awesome Stevie Wonder jazz cover and Maurice Brown (no relation!) gives us ‘Fly By Night’ . Terry Doc Handy and Kate Ceberano round off the mix with some more uptempo sounds (Check ‘Like Now’!) . A worthy addition to the archives we hope you agree.
Skip below to read some words about the mix from the man himself.
We thank Ennio and hope you show him some love in the comments section.

A word from Ennio
While I was gathering tunes for possible inclusion in my mix, I found myself getting hooked on Salim Washington’s ‘Morning is the Time for Miracles’. This set me off on an unintended path, where I have now ended up doing a mix that is especially for morning listening. Not morning in the sense of 5am kebabs after a big night in the clubs, more like waking refreshed with the sun streaming in and all the promise a new day brings. For many people this mix will be best suited to an unhurried Sunday morning. So I have mostly avoided the dancefloor bangers, and kept well away from so much of the other music I love, whether techno or boogie or hip hop. With the exception of the last tune from my hometown of Melbourne, all of the other pieces are from the USA, still the place whose jazz – old and new – inspires me the most.
There is a moment in the Letta Mbulu tune which has always sounded to me like she slips into English for a line. I like to think the studio engineer was gesturing to her through the glass about whether she wanted him to get her something from down the shops. Does anyone else hear this? It’s a jazz LOL.
The WES Group tune is available for free download via www.heardandfelt.com on ‘Stylin’ 500’, a 44-track compilation I made last year to celebrate 10 years and 500 episodes of my radio show. Also included on the comp is my remix of the Raah Project and more killer jazz tunes I have introduced through Stylin’ from Nailah Porter, Leron Thomas, True Live, No BS! Brass and others.
Thanks and respect to the extended Jazz Meet family. I would love to meet a few more of you one day. In the meantime, let me know what your favourite ‘morning jazz’ tunes are.
