First up, we’ve got to extend a big thanks to all those who made it down to our Jazz Meet Live session at The Shoreditch this past Sunday. What an afternoon! The band tore it up (again) and both Nik Weston and special guest Jarred Rice played some storming tunes until closing. If you missed it, and want to see how it went down, we’ve uploaded a couple of videos up on the Jazz Meet Facebook page and they’ll be more to follow shortly on Youtube. All being well we should be back next month on Sunday 1st May for a special Bank Holiday session.
Unfortunately there was no ‘Live at The Jazz Meet’ mix captured this month, but we’re going to get Jarred to record something for us soon, and in the meantime we’ve lined up something equally nice for this week’s podcast. So without further ado, we’re proud to present a special guest selection from renowned Spanish DJ, cratedigger and deep jazz collector Javi Bayo, who dropped this little beauty in our inbox Sunday morning. Recorded in one take and nearly all taken from the original vinyl (aside from the last track), he has truly blessed us with a stellar around the world mix of rare dancefloor jazz. We love it and we hope you do too. Heavyweight gear via Spain, Argentina, Philippines, Brazil and Japan, it features music from Tino Contreras, Jorge Lopez Ruiz, The Jazz Friends, Francisco Mora, Roberto Miguel Miranda and Trindade to name but a few. Stream the mix below and don’t forget to join our newsletter to receive this and all future mixtapes straight to your inbox ready for download. After the widget below, you’ll also find some insight about the mix in Javi’s own words and some info about the man himself.
Thank you Javi!

THE MIX IN HIS OWN WORDS…
Recorded on 1st April 2011 in Madrid, Spain. This selection includes rare jazz recordings from Spain, Argentina, Philippines, Brazil, Japan…
“Marcha de los Dioses” was recorded in Spain by Mexican drummer Tino Contreras and released in Spain only as a promotional EP. It will hopefully be part of the Spanish Jazz compilation project I am currently working on, due to be released later this year. “El Grito” is the starting track on Jorge Lopez Ruiz conceptual album of the same title. Then some will be surprised to find out about 7 Samurai‘s original source for “Bluesanova”… no much re-editing work would have been necessary for this tune (originally on a Philippines only album) to become a dancefloor bomb! Back to the UK with “El Maja” a classic tune by master percussionist Robin Jones. “Samba de Amor” is a great uptempo track released on the privately pressed album called “Mora!” by Sun Ra Arkestra member Francisco Mora (also part of Carl Craig‘s project Innerzone Orchestra some years later). Then we have two superb, and often overlooked, tracks released on Nimbus, one of the most interesting independent jazz labels that should be appealing to those into Strata East or Tribe. Trindade is an obscure Brazilian album that I hardly can say much about it… quite a few great tracks on this double vinyl and musicians such as trombonist Edson Maciel (also author of the featured track Mr Keller) playing on it. “O.D.” is another dancefloor jazz funk gemm that should have been compiled or reissued ages ago… And last not least, Stevie Wonder‘s “Too High” as recorded by Toshinori Kondo and recently included on DJ Hiroko Otsuka‘s latest compilation “The Piece of Trio”
