Today’s addition to this week’s special mix series is Orsii, who most of you probably already know from her excellent mixes on the Mixcloud site (Check here and here if you don’t). She dropped into The Jazz Meet late Sunday afternoon to bless us with a flavoursome hour’s worth of classic jazz, spanning the entire spectrum of the genre. Knowledge dropped. But I guess you learn a thing or two if you spend your days working in the Jazzman offices!
Highlights? There’s spiritual jazz from Phil Cohran and Cannonball Adderley, funky stuff from Sabu Martinez and Leon Thomas (How GOOD is that bassline?), some ethio-jazz from Salah Ragab and a touch of Latin from The Latin Jazz Quintet and their classic take on Miles Davis’ ‘Milestones‘.
Continuing this week’s fundraising effort for Macmillan Cancer Support, you can download this set and the other five mixes in the series by making a small donation to http://www.justgiving.com/thejazzmeet. Thanks for listening.
Next up: Jake Holloway (BBE) on a Latin tip!

Podcast #31: 21.08.11 Rob Coley
Jazz Meet resident Rob Coley delivers this next mix in the series, and it’s chock full of funkiness. 54 minutes of music tried and tested at our weekly event and plenty of killers ripe for rediscovery. Things kick off with ‘JP’s Thing’, a nod to the late great Frank Foster who passed away three weeks ago, and it sets the mood perfectly with its surging melodies and righteous, brash tones. Next up we get the funky jazz fusion of Tatsuya Takahashi and The Tokyo Union and the jazz funk stylings of Ramon Morris and Buddy Terry, before the one and only Peter Herbolzheimer gives Weldon Irvine’s classic ‘Mr. Clean’ a proper big band makeover. Things switch up a bit courtesy of the spiritual jazz of Billy Harper and Jef Gilson, before Art Blakey’s ‘Master Mind’ and the Colman Brothers’ ‘The Chief’ round everything off on a high note.

Podcast #31: 21.08.11 Rob Coley by The Jazz Meet on Mixcloud
Podcast #17: 25.04.11 Rob Coley Jazz Mix
New week, new jazz mix. This week, Jazz Meet resident Rob Coley steps up to deliver a pensive selection of deep instrumental jazz. Beginning with ‘Time Piece 1’ from The Greg Foat Group (taken from the debut LP ‘Dark is the Sun’ out on Jazzman Records next month), Julian ‘Cannonball’ Adderley (re-edited here by Rise on ‘Shine a Light’) then announces the arrival of Hannibal and the Sunrise Orchestra and their own imitable take on Errol Garner‘s ‘Misty’. Brand new music from Sean Khan and Matthew Halsall follows, before we hit the frenzied drum and sax interplay of the epically percussive ‘De I Comahlee Ah’ from Jackie McLean and Michael Carvin. Detroit legend Phil Ranelin, alongside Henry Franklin and Big Black, weighs in with some ‘Perseverance’ before Gil Scott-Heron, Brian Jackson and a Kenny Drew trio date close us out.
You can catch Rob DJing alongside Nik Weston and Kola Abidogun and of course the live band, this coming Sunday for a special Bank Holiday Jazz Meet Live session at The Shoreditch E1. Another full day of live jazz, drinks and dancing should ensue.

When Beats and Jazz collide… Rise ‘Messages’
Been meaning to write something about this album ever since I first caught a listen to a few tracks on Michael Linney’s Hedonist Show about a month back. Although I’m a big fan of Futuristica Music’s output, this one flew under the radar until thankfully we discovered each other care of the radio show and its been making my morning commute a lot more bearable ever since. ‘Messages’ is the debut album from promising young Manchester beat maker / musician Rise (real name Evan Jones), and it is possibly one of my favourite releases of 2011 so far.
This is no ordinary jazz record. Taking a cue from the sample heavy loose jazz pastiches of Madlib, Rise (who also records under the aliases Mecca:83 and Redefinition) pairs hip hop drums with percussion and snippets from a dusty jazz collection to produce a modern-day take on the spiritual jazz sound of the Sixties and Seventies. However, whereas the West Coast veteran’s work often results in tracks of an eclectic and deeply experimental nature which sometimes can seem sprawling, Rise manages to create a perfect blend between the two worlds and over thirteen tracks delivers an album of some promise.
From the opening gambit of the Cannonball Adderley dialogue in the intro and the sweeping Middle Eastern vibe of “Messages Part 1â€, the scene is set for a downtempo selection of deep and uplifting sounds channeling the works of Coltrane, Sanders, Lateef and Sun-Ra. Such is the influence of these artists and sounds of the past, tracks like ‘Psalm 64’ and ‘Dusk in The Sudan’ both seem like lost recordings from the celebrated Impulse catalogue whilst the album standout ‘Shine Down’ with its righteous refrain and bubbling drums, bounces along in a style not too dissimilar to former label mate Kira Neris’ sampled works.
Rise never really veers too far away from his hip-hop template however, and as such, each track here benefits from an assortment of well crafted beats and loops that sit beautifully together to produce an intriguing record.
The album is available now to buy via Juno and should you wish to try before you buy you can stream snippets of the album via his Bandcamp widget below.
Podcast #3: 03.01.11 A 2010 Jazz Retrospective
The first Jazz Meet cloudcast of 2011 compiles a few of our favourite releases from the past year. It’s not conclusive, as you’ll notice a fair few of the year’s higher profile artists missing. Hopefully we can rectify that with a second cloudcast later this month.
Here, we focus on the more contemporary side of things, kicking off with Ukranian jazz outfit Dudko Quintet, and follow with new material from The Dave Holland Octet and The Cookers (Billy Harper, Eddie Henderson, Cecil McBee et al). A collaborative effort from Talib Kibwe, Bobby Few, Sangoma Everett and Louis Petrucciani eases us down a notch, before James Tatum and The Lloyd Miller Trio (both released/reissued on Jazzman Records last year) swing us into spiritual territory. Gregory Porter provides a killer bit of vocal jazz while Porter Records supply a gorgeous (recently reissued) track from Finnish maestro Eero Koivistoinen. Gondwana’s Nat Birchall and Japan’s Masa Sextet (produced by Patrick Forge) round off the mix.
