A special treat this week. We don’t often delve deep into the 1950s and 1960s with our mixtapes but when our friend Tony Higgins offered us the chance to post this stellar mix of jazz, we just couldn’t say no. Originally posted on his own TonyTales Mixcloud, we are pleased to offer it up once again and just from the tracklisting alone, you can tell this ranks right up there when it comes to heavyweight selections. Featuring music from an all-star cast of musicians including Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Jordan, Milt Jackson, Freddie Hubbard and Hank Mobley, there’s over an hour’s worth of hard bop, soul jazz and classic jazz grooves to get your teeth into. From the opening strains of ‘Theme From The Cool World’ right through to the cool interplay of Garland, Coltrane and Byrd on closing cut ‘Birk’s Work’, this is the sweeping and undistilled sound of a genre as it
For our 75th Jazz Meet mix, we welcome British jazz collector and DJ Tony Higgins AKA TonyTales back into the fold for a cracking Nimbus West label special. What follows is a perfect introduction to the US imprint, active predominantly in the late 70s and early 80s and home to Horace Tapscott and his Pan-Afrikan People’s Arkestra, Dadisi Kamolafe, Adele Sebastian, Nate Morgan and the Creative Arts Ensemble with BJ Crowley. A 45 minute mix, recorded from the orginal LPs (many of which are scarce and long out of print), it’s a pleasure that through Tony we can help shine a light (albeit briefly) back on some of these long forgotten treasures. If you like your jazz deep, rare and spiritual, then you’re going to love this, and for the rest of you we hope you enjoy this quick listen from one of London’s deepest jazz heads. After a little break, we return with a killer mix of Fender Rhodes based jazz music from British jazz collector and DJ Tony Higgins. After his recent Japanese jazz mix, we are thrilled to host this second selection and it’s chock full of assorted flavours with the only constant being that all of the songs feature the use of the much celebrated electric piano. And boy does it sound great for it! Kicking off with Mikio Masuda’s sublime ‘Let’s Get Together’, the mix deeps and weaves through vocal jazz, straight up soul jazz and a little fusion here and there, with tracks from the likes of Barry Miles, Horace Silver (with Andy Bey), Duke Pearson, Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express, Primo Kim and one of the dons on the Fender Rhodes, Frank Cunnimodo all featuring. The mix culminates with an awesome piece of music from early 70s Ian Carr and Nucleus.
We’ve got a very special treat this week for number #65 in our mix series as we welcome jazz collector Tony Higgins into the fold. The executive producer of Gilles Peterson’s ‘Impressed’ UK jazz compilations, he’s currently working on a new comp of Japanese jazz for the label and he’s put together this little selection to give us a flavour of what to expect from the release. And what a selection! Plenty of heavy hitters of a hard bop and deep modal variety from some of Japan’s finest jazz musicians. Having collected records for 25 years and in recent years, 78s, he can be found occasionally DJing rhythm and blues, gospel, jump blues, Latin and jazz at club nights and festivals around The UK – this year he will be playing at Secret Garden Party, Bestival and Camp Bestival.
