We’ve been mesmerised by the sounds of Collocutor ever since we caught a snippet of the spiritually charged Eastern sounds of ‘Archaic Morning’ earlier this year. Fast forward six months and not only is the full album set to debut shortly on On The Corner Records, but the label have also lined up a launch party to coincide with the release on 29th September at Camden’s much vaunted Forge Music and Arts Venue.
For those of you a little new to the name of Collocutor, you may want to check out an interview we conducted with main protagonist Tamar back in March. A saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist who performs with the likes of Kelis (when she performs in the UK), as well as an integral member of The Fontanelles and Dele Sosimi’s Afrobeat Orchestra, Tamar has been perfecting her craft on stage for a good number of years but ‘Instead’, produced by label mate Emanative, marks her first release as a leader. The album is certainly one of the more hotly tipped jazz releases of recent times, with Gilles Peterson, Patrick Forge, Dom Servini and DJ Harv all giving their early seal of approval to tracks from the project – ‘Agama’ is perhaps our pick of the bunch, a cascade of horns paired with a bubbling rhythm section proving to irresistible to ignore. This is certainly no one track album however, as people who’ve already heard the afore-mentioned album opener ‘Archaic Morning’ will no doubt attest. The future thinkers amongst you might also like to know that Peckham’s finest undercover beatsmith Al Dobson Jr. has recently reworked ‘Agama’ to respectfully pull it into an ever more enticing direction that’s sure to capture the band a few more fans! You can sample that remix below.
The launch at The Forge on 29th September serves as the first official outing for the 7-piece band (which also features Josephine Davies on tenor sax, Simon Finch on trumpet, Marco Piccioni on guitar and Suman Joshi on bass), and promises to be an early glimpse into how these expansive instrumentals will fare in a live setting. In addition to the headline set from Collocutor, Emanative, On The Corner label boss Pystol Pete and The Jazz Meet’s own Rob Coley will also be joining the party to dip into their record bags to play a selection of exotic rhythms that will more than complement the live show. Tickets are £8 in advance or £10 on the door.
* For a little added incentive, On The Corner also have a rare test press of the album and previously released ‘Over’ EP to give away to one lucky entrant. For your chance to win, simply submit your response to the question above and ‘like’ the On The Corner Records Facebook page to be entered into both draws.
Closing date for entries is Friday 26th September at 12:00 am.
For those of who would prefer a rather more aesthetically pleasing finished copy of the album, pressed on 180 gram virgin vinyl and featuring a double artwork sleeve designed by Yohanna Alem, silk screen printed and individually numbered, then you can pre-order ‘Instead’ now via the On The Corner Bandcamp. There’s even a handy option to take advantage of a combined LP and launch ticket deal, which offers up a nice discount for those that would like to get their hands on the LP before it’s released nationally in October!
