Another super release by way of West London and the Jazz Re:freshed crew. Fresh from their star turn at The Jazz Meet this past November, it’s Grant Windsor and Richard Spaven again on the collab as the pair, alongside accomplished bassist Neville ‘Level’ Malcolm, create a new project ‘The Sure Co’. The first material to see the light of day is this EP, part of the ongoing Jazz Re:freshed 5ive series, which has also seen music released from Kaidi Tatham and, of course, the man Spaven!
Both Windsor and Spaven have a history when it comes to recording together but the actual seeds were sown for this project as all three musicians toured with Jose James, Gregory Porter, Nailah Porter, and TY. The defining moment came during sound check on one particular trip to Germany with US jazz vocalist Nailah Porter, when after some deliberation, the trio finally decided to head into the studio and record some material. The fruits of that session can be heard below, and we have to admit it sounds pretty fresh. From the opening strains of ‘Koln’ with its ‘Fall In Love’ key flourishes through to the deliciously rounded vibe of ‘Persephone’, all three men bring the goods to the table. On ‘Loose Shots’, the smooth and sultry voice of Nailah Porter features, bringing the project right back to its earnest beginnings.
Much like the Spaven’s 5ive release which preceded it, the five tracks here mix equal measures of jazz and broken beat, while keeping a distinctly hip-hop sensibility about the beats. Neville Malcolm’s upright bass blends effortlessly into the background as Spaven’s intricate drum patterns complement Grant Windsor’s exquisite touch on the keys. Check out a preview below and pick the album up on CD and digital when it hits the stores Monday 10th December.
Jazz Re:freshed are holding a launch party for the EP Thursday 13th December at their regular weekly haunt, Mau Mau’s, 265 Portobello Road W11 1LR. Now you know where the action will be – did someone say roadblock?
