As we take our first tentative steps into December and the festive season, we unleash the first of our seasonal mixtapes to keep you all warm and fuzzy this winter. Our brother from another Koray Özel provides the soundtrack this week, and it’s a beautiful downtempo selection of classic and contemporary jazz with a definite atmospheric lean. The Toronto resident, co-founder of A Child Runs Free, Death by Jazz!, Nite Moves (TO), and now label manager at his own Istolethesoul Records imprint, pairs new with old in a scintillating mix, kicking things off with a little Sarah Vaughan, Gene Shaw and Dorothy Ashby before continuing the ascent with choice sounds from Madlib (in one of his many guises), Nick Rosen and Ahmad Jamal. He ventures into the ‘spiritual’ realm before rounding things off with music from two heavyweights of today’s jazz scene, Jose James and Matthew Halsall. Give it a listen and let us know what you think. It really is a delicious morsel!
