It’s been a quiet start to the year what with no gigs lined up for The Jazz Meet, so we’ve all had to occupy ourselves a little more at the weekends! With this in mind some of the DJs at The Jazz Meet have clubbed together to put a smaller event on based all around records! Inviting record dealers down with crates of secondhand vinyl to sell, and DJs to entertain the punters while they dig, we’ve taken over a back room of a pub in London’s E7 neighbourhood (otherwise known as Forest Gate) on a monthly basis. This mix by Jazz Meet / Dig A Little resident Rob Coley was recorded live this past Saturday at our March event and encompasses just under an hour’s worth of jazz played straight from the crate! If you’d like to learn more about the event, please feel free to visit our new website or hit us up
A little extra treat this week as we present a live set from special guest selector Tom Greig, recorded live this past Sunday at Floripa. Tom dropped an energetic mix of styles, including the classic Bobby Hutcherson Latin jazz banger ‘La Malanga’, Brian Auger’s ‘Happiness is Just Around the Bend’, a little Marc Moulin and some blues tinged goodness from Rahsaan Roland Kirk. We also got a taste of George Duke from his seldom seen ‘The Inner Source’ in the form of the tasty ‘My Soul’ and some newness from Thundercat, as well as a few other bits we still need to find. Give it a listen above and if you’d like us to try to record a few more live sets in the future, give us a shout. You can also grab the last set of the same evening from Jazz Meet resident Rob Coley here: Live at The Jazz Meet 18/08/2013.
Podcast #110: 15.08.13 Disco e Cultura (Volume 2) by Tom Greig This week we’re pleased to welcome back our friend http://www.mixcloud.com/tom-greig/ to The Jazz Meet spotlight. Having dazzled us before with a beautiful deep jazz mix (#84), he slips right back into top gear to bring us a follow up to his much loved ‘Disco e Cultura’ mixtape (#99) that he completed for us a while back. Much like the first, this time around you can expect an exquisite selection of Brazilian jazz, samba MPB and a few modern reworks, all stitched together nicely with a perfectly sunny vibe. Things kick off with a little Anamaria and Mauricio, delving deep into the 90 minutes you’ll also hear music from the Zimbo Trio, Gal Costa, MPB4, Marcos Valle and even a little Don Cherry. If there’s one thing we’ve learnt from Tom it’s that he’s got an enviable array of nice
As a little predecessor to this Sunday’s Jazz Meet at Floripa, our guest selector for the day, DJ and producer Kay Suzuki dropped in this little taster of a mix to get us in the mood. A 30 minute selection of some of Kay’s current faves on a jazzy tip, it runs the gamut from the Brazilian and percussive rhythms of Paulinho da Costa and Zaka Percussion right through to the classic soul and funk of Fred Wesley and Don Blackman. It’s all neatly tied up by the appearance of two Balearic chuggers in the form of Wally Badarou and Herb Alpert. We hope you enjoy this little session and thanks for listening!
