Somethings never change. An unassuming Sendspace link. An email in the inbox with a track list with little comment. And then you download and press play. Yes anyone can compile a mixtape but there’s a line you cross when you’re able to select an almost forgotten bunch of gems (some completely un-Googleable) and create a vibe. We’re lucky to have hosted guest mixes from a number of people over the years but there are only a few that leave us scratching our heads. Les Fisher is one of those guys. Here you’ll find (we presume) rare (cos we can’t find it), privately pressed Jazz, Russian obscurities, funky flute and Latin sounds abound. Thank you Les and thank you for listening. We hope you enjoy this awesome selection as much as we do. TRACKLIST 1. Theatre West – Cool Out Your Mind 2. Oktava – Ateisiu Tylia Naktj 3. Baba Yaga
Yusef Lateef – Hellbound – 1976 [Soul-Jazz] On this day way back in 1920, Mr Yusef Lateef was born and today at the age of 93 he is indeed still going strong. Happy birthday Sir and a hat tip to all the exquisite music you have given us over the years. So many faves, here’s one to kick things off from his ‘The Doctor Is In.. And Out’ LP released in 1976!
It’s Friday afternoon and what better way to get in the mood for the weekend than with this epic reworking of Pepe Bradock and Freddie Hubbard by Ms Jessica Lauren et al. We must do it again sometime…
On this day back in 1969, Albert Ayler was putting the finishing touches to one of his most seminal albums. We think you will all agree that if music is indeed the healing force of the universe, we need to get some bigger speakers. In the meantime, play this one out LOUD! ALBERT AYLER ”Music is the Healing Force of the Universe”Taken from the album “Music is the Healing Force of the Universe” released on Impulse in 1969.
We’ve got a fresh mixtape up, this time from our new resident DJ Lukas Kuhn. It’s a fifty minute excursion into Czechoslovak jazz and it’s rather tasty, featuring plenty of fusion, big band and heavy jazz funk flavours. Give it a listen on the link below! http://www.mixcloud.com/thejazzmeet/podcast-112-200813-czechoslovak-jazz-1967-1980-by-lukas-kuhn/
