The Jazz Meet DJ Chart – November 2012
In a new, occasional web series, the Jazz Meet resident DJ team dip into their record bags to share some of their big jazz records for the coming month. Here’s their picks for November. If you make it to one of our gigs, don’t forget to come and say hi – just don’t ask us for ‘Gangnam Style’!

Jarred’s Five for November
1. The Greg Foat Group – For A Breath I Tarry (forthcoming on the Girl And Robot With Flowers LP on Jazzman Records)
Pick a track any track kinda situation here. This LP is such a treat to listen to and this track is the soundtrack to my journey home after a night-shift. it’s very starless and bible black and at over 8 minutes that’s a wonderful thing.

2. That’s Why – Children of the Future Age (taken from the That’s Why LP on Jazzman Records)
Sublime Christian Folk Jazz from 1970s Norway – not my words but what more would I need to say…
httpa://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZeIDMQXud0
3. New Don Ellis Band – It’s Your Thing (taken from The New Don Ellis Band Goes Underground LP, CBS)
Great horns, great vocals, great version….. a great surprise find for me last month.
httpa://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W86ab6qeWHU
4. Gas Mask – The Immigrant (taken from Their First Album LP on Tonsil Records)
Search this LP online and you won’t find a lot of nice things said about it. But this track will stand up to anything else I’ve bought this year no problems.
httpa://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzOTSlqq8ew
5. Terry Callier – You Goin’ Miss Your Candyman (taken from the What Colour is Love LP on Cadet Records)
A recent and very sad loss to the music world… and very close to one of the first LPs I ever purchased. No record collection is complete without this record.

Nik’s Five for November
1. Alive! – Skin Do Le Le (taken from the City Life LP on Alive Records)
Viva Brazil club classic gets covered for a Jazz Dance biggie.
httpa://youtu.be/ztkF9GL02n0
2. Nina Simone – Baltimore (taken from the 45 on CTI)
Randy Newman gets covered by Nina for this sultry down tempo jazz classic.
httpa://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kKUhRyoZT8
3. Gene Ammons – Jungle Strut (taken from the 45 on Prestige)
Swirling organs, tight fatback drums and that unforgettable sax.
httpa://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ3ERhE0KWo
4. Sarah Vaughn – The Mystery Of Man (taken from Let It Live – Sarah Vaughan Sings ‘One World One Peace LP on Five Record)
Awesome vocals but check the strings… tingle down the spine a plenty. Early doors Jazz Meet fodder or end of the night anthem.
httpa://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Clt4WSjG1_E
5. Jimmy Owens – Do It To It (taken from Jimmy Owens LP on Horizon Records)
Boom. Infectious Club classic. Always in the box.

Rob’s Five for November
1. Jimi Tenor / Kabu Kabu – Universal Love (taken from The Mystery of Aether LP on Kindred Spirits)
Mellow vibes from Jimi Tenor but oh so sweet.
httpa://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AN35hQuxN0I
2. The Greg Foat Group – Girl & Robot With Flowers (part 2) (taken from the Girl & Robot With Flowers 10″ on Jazzman Records)
It’s all about Part 2 of the title track. A raucous uptempo organ lead dance floor frenzied bomb of a cut. A fine follow-up to their début album.
3. Menagerie – The Quietening (forthcoming on the They Shall Inherit LP on Tru Thoughts)
Taken from a forthcoming new set of deep and spiritual jazz music masterminded by Lance Ferguson, Afrocentric rhythms and spoken word make this one for the dancefloor.
4. Thad Jones, Lewis and Jon Faddis with the Swedish Radio Jazz Group – Greetings And Salutations (taken from the Greetings And Salutations LP on Biograph)
Head straight to the title track – 13 minutes of pure big band jazz badness.
httpa://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgrZjpdp7RI
5. Henri Pierre Noel – Diskette (forthcoming on the Piano LP reissued on Wah Wah 45s)
Disco-fied piano jazz of the highest order from this Haitian pianist.

Catch Rob spinning at The Jazz Meet, Sunday 4th November and Sunday 25th November.

Sid’s Five for November
1. Carlos Garnett – Good Shepherd (taken from Let The Melody Ring On LP on Muse)
Strings, brass and an almost disco tempo with Garnett wailing over the top.
httpa://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWuJ0RlIG7E
2. Roy Haynes – Receipt Please (taken from Sugar Roy LP on Kitty Records)
Roy Haynes and Ron Carter sparring for seven minutes of funky drums and bass.
httpa://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5CEzIr2ZOg
3. Ohio Penitentiary 511 Jazz Ensemble – Java Man (taken from Hard Luck Soul LP on Jazzman)
Forthcoming convict jazz from Jazzman, of course! This one is a big band funky soul jazz beauty.
4. Walt Dickerson – The Cry (taken from This Is Walt Dickerson LP on New Jazz)
The album is known for ‘Death And Taxes’ but this is definitely the track on the album for me.
httpa://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBUydPutJgU
5. Mike Longo – Wyyowa (taken from Talk With The Spirits LP on Pablo)
Such a great head-nodding rhythm to the track. Bob Cranshaw supplying the Blaxploitation drums.

Podcast #78: 26.10.12 Adrian Leach ‘Jazz Espagnole’ Mix
This week we are proud to present another mix from Adrian Leach of the much celebrated Happy Jazz Radio Show. If you checked his last effort for us back in June of last year you know this particular gentleman doesn’t mess about when it comes to his selections. For this session Adrian has put together a scintillating sample of jazz from South America (an area of the world that his radio shows consistently specialise in). There is lots of rareness to be uncovered so delve in to experience plenty of Fender Rhodes moments, fusion touches, haunting vocals, cosmic synths and stinging brass and above all, great musicians that rarely get the exposure they deserve. Check the mix and please do not overlook this vast array of talent any longer. Thanks for listening and, of course, if you do enjoy the tunes, make sure to drop some pleasantries below in the comments section.

LIVE at The Jazz Meet – July 2012
Your monthly reminder for what promises to be an exciting month at Floripa for The Jazz Meet.
Jazz Meet bassist Jason Simpson kicks things off on the 1st with his accomplished quintet, while on the 15th we welcome Swedish songstress Liz Elensky on to the Jazz Meet stage for the first of our special jazz vocalist sessions. We’re very excited to host only the third gig of former Hackney Colliery Band saxophonist Cath Roberts’ new septet project, Quadraceratops on the 29th – we’ve seen them in action and they are amazing. The Jazz Meet Band hold court on the 8th July and 22nd July and by now you should know what to expect – lively soul jazz with an occasional Afro-Latin feel… they kick hard. Special guest DJ this month is Rob Whitlock on the 8th, one of the deepest jazz collectors we know (and we know a fair few). It’s going to be wonderful this month… hope you can join us.
