Tonight, The Jazz Meet pays homage to the late, great Cal Tjader. Expect an evening of vibes led Latin Jazz as we proudly welcome not one but two leading lights of London’s music scene, vibraphonist and multi-instrumentalist Orphy Robinson (The Jazz Warriors) and the versatile keyboard prowess of Ms Jessica Lauren. Forming the nucleus of the band this week, the pair will be dipping into the vast catalogue of the Latin legend’s catalogue to perform two sets of some of his most endearing compositions while in the DJ box, Jazz Meet resident Rob Coley and special guest Mr Boogie AKA The Vinyl Junkie (Melting Pot / Soulsa) raid their own records collection before, after and in between to bring you more music touched by the mallets of Tjader. For those of you who have passed through The Jazz Meet on any given weekend, you will no doubt know that Jessica Lauren is a very talented lady. Since scoring her first record deal with London’s influential Soul Jazz Records back in the 1990s, Jessica has been a constant fixture on the underground London music scene. earning her stripes playing with the likes of Jean Carne, Tom Browne, Dexter Wansel and James Mason. Over the years, she’s also lent her considerable talents to an assortment of productions from producers as diverse as Joey Negro, Alex Attias, United Future Organisation, Scrimshire and Kay Suzuki to name but a few. Aside from her regular appearances at Floripa holding down the keyboard chair in The Jazz Meet Band, she is also a core member of Nick Woodmansey’s Emanative collective, who after wowing Dingwalls back in the summer, are gearing up for another big release with their latest single ‘Love In Outer Space’, a futuristic
Recorded just over a week ago as Jessica Lauren put together a special Jazz Meet house band and to kick off our 2013 calendar at Floripa on Sunday 13th January. Here the ensemble rip through a brilliant interpretation of Pépé Bradock celebrated deep house classic ‘Deep Burnt’ before effortlessly shifting into the tune that it sampled, Freddie Hubbard’s ‘Little Sunflower’ (just listen to those strings!). August has quickly reared it’s head and we’ve got more great things lined up at The Jazz Meet for the rest of summer. Read on to find out more… We kick things off this month at Floripa on Sunday 5th August with the first of two resident sessions. The Jazz Meet Band led by Jake Telford on sax and Jessica Lauren on keys will be in attendance, ably assisted by resident DJs Sid Ford and Jarred Rice on the decks. On August 12th, as the XXX Olympiad packs its bags and heads to Heathrow to catch a plane to Rio, we’ll be putting on our very own closing party with a Brazilian Special featuring the vocal talents of MS HEIDI VOGEL, the Jazz Meet Band and DJs Nik Weston and Rob Coley.
