So we round off March’s Jazz Meet programme at Floripa with a very special tribute to the original street poet Gil Scott-Heron who sadly passed away just under two years ago. As an artist, we’re sure you’ll agree he had a profound effect on most of us and as his birthday falls on April 1st, we thought there would be no better time to honour a legend and delve a little deeper into the man’s catalogue for a little rediscovery of some of the singer’s finer moments. So for four hours on Sunday 31st March 2013, we dedicate a large chunk of our weekly event the late Chicago native.
On the day, resident Sid Ford will be kicking things off at 5pm in the Floripa DJ booth, digging into his vinyl vaults and dropping a 90 minute set of Gil Scott-Heron tracks, ranging from his Flying Dutchman début right through to his later work in the 1980/90s. Then from 7.30pm to 9pm The Jazz Meet Band, led by Jake and Jessica, will take the stage to perform a selection of tracks including a heavy dose of GSH alongside special guest vocalist Andre Espeut. Entry is as always free!
We’ve also got to give a shout out to Dutch illustrator and designer John Peter Raven who allowed us to use his brilliant drawing for the flyer above. Make sure you check out his website for more works of art on that kind of tip!
