As we awake from our extended New Year slumber, we bring news of a special event this coming Sunday with one of our favourite bands of the moment, Resolution 88. Anyone who has followed our journey over the past three years will no doubt at least be aware of the group, fronted by the talented Mr Tom O’Grady. Well since their last appearance for us back in November, a lot has happened to the young band. They almost immediately gained the support slot for Snarky Puppy’s most recent London date, and having wooed the crowd with their own unique brand of hard-hitting jazz funk, the band soon gained further plaudits from scene stalwarts Snowboy and Craig Charles (who recently interviewed Tom on his BBC Radio 6 radio show). Mr Charles has also been giving tracks from the band’s forthcoming début some spins on the radio and with the release of the
Now our Floripa love affair has ended it’s time to pick ourselves up and get creative. The weekly live event with house band and guests will reappear but until we find a permanent new space to accommodate us, you can expect to see one or two specials pop up in the coming months at other venues across the city. It was of course always our intention to welcome pianist Tom O’Grady and his band Resolution 88 back to the stage after their début live show with us last October, and now with their first full album imminent, and with a slew of well received live dates under their belt, we think it’s fair to say their star is well and truly on the ascent. Prior to that first gig, we caught up with Tom to give us a little insight into his world. What we actually got was an amazingly
The Jazz Meet heads to Brussels this weekend for a Saturday night party in the heart of the city alongside our good friend The Jazz Kid and live acts Binti and Gratitude Trio.
So we round off March’s Jazz Meet programme at Floripa with a very special tribute to the original street poet Gil Scott-Heron who sadly passed away just under two years ago. As an artist, we’re sure you’ll agree he had a profound effect on most of us and as his birthday falls on April 1st, we thought there would be no better time to honour a legend and delve a little deeper into the man’s catalogue for a little rediscovery of some of the singer’s finer moments. So for four hours on Sunday 31st March 2013, we dedicate a large chunk of our weekly event the late Chicago native. On the day, resident Sid Ford will be kicking things off at 5pm in the Floripa DJ booth, digging into his vinyl vaults and dropping a 90 minute set of Gil Scott-Heron tracks, ranging from his Flying Dutchman début right through to his
Well, we have to say that 2012 has been an AMAZING year for us all at The Jazz Meet. On a collective level, we moved the event to the beautiful confines of Floripa in Shoreditch which helped take our little weekly jazz event to the next level (a special shout out to these guys for being super supportive). Over the past twelve months, we’ve also been blessed to have welcomed so many great musicians, vocalists and DJs on to the stage and we hope more will follow when we get back into the swing of things come Sunday 13th January 2013. In the meantime though we’ve got ONE last party before we bow out for the festive period which takes place Sunday 16th December. Having relaunched the new event a week before Christmas in 2010, it’s our BIG 2nd birthday and we’re planning something real nice for you all. We’re hooking up the
