It’s been a quiet start to the year what with no gigs lined up for The Jazz Meet, so we’ve all had to occupy ourselves a little more at the weekends! With this in mind some of the DJs at The Jazz Meet have clubbed together to put a smaller event on based all around records! Inviting record dealers down with crates of secondhand vinyl to sell, and DJs to entertain the punters while they dig, we’ve taken over a back room of a pub in London’s E7 neighbourhood (otherwise known as Forest Gate) on a monthly basis. This mix by Jazz Meet / Dig A Little resident Rob Coley was recorded live this past Saturday at our March event and encompasses just under an hour’s worth of jazz played straight from the crate! If you’d like to learn more about the event, please feel free to visit our new website or hit us up
In our time of hosting the mixtapes we share with you, we’ve met a variety of DJs, selectors and record collectors who consistently bring the goods. There are only a few though that stand head and shoulders above with their selections, and this week’s guest selector Mr Les Fisher AKA jazfresh is one such gentleman. He is somewhat of an enigma to us here at The Jazz Meet but he’s clearly a man who has collated an immense knowledge of black music over the past 60 odd years (a fact that is more than supported with his own ‘No Boundaries’ selections over on his Mixcloud). An unassuming chap, once in a while Les will quietly slip a new mix to us with no fanfare or hype, we press play and instantly start scratching our heads. “What is this tune?” “who did this cover?”, “what is THIS!?!” are just some of
We’re back and kick off a new round of sounds with a great guest mix from one of our favourite DJs/selectors Mr Phil Levene. Not only is Phil one of the nicest blokes you’ll ever meet, he also runs the Eclectic Jazz website and radio show where he airs an assortment of jazz both old and new. Here he dips once again into his enviable crates to bring us a tip-top selection of tracks from across the musical spectrum. Things start sprightly a little Jaco Pastorius before we revisit some modern-day goodness from Fila Brazilia, Beatless and Nu Tropic. For those that dig the older stuff, there’s also plenty classic material with Pat Martino, Herbie Hancock, Charlie Palmieri and Maynard Ferguson all representing before Phil rounds things off with a little future fusion from IG Culture’s New Sector Movements. If you like what you hear, you’ll be happy to know
With the departure of our friend and colleague Jarred Rice to Canadian shores , it left a space for another DJ to step into the Jazz meet arena. Introducing our new resident DJ Lukas Kuhn. A regular at The Jazz Meet over the past couple of years and with extensive experience of DJing his own parties in London, we are happy to welcome Lukas to the team and here he provides us with his first Jazz Meet mix featuring an awesome selection of tasty jazz morsels from the former Czechoslovakian state. On this mix, Lukas takes us on a rip-roaring ride through his jazz crates taking in everything from funky jazz fusion and frenetic big band jazz, to a little Latin flavoured hard bop and jazz funk. We hope you enjoy this little playlist and thank you for listening. If it brightens up your day, drop Lukas a comment on our Mixcloud page!
