A day after what would have been Gil Scott-Heron’s 64th birthday, we present an exclusive mixtape of the man’s tunes as Jazz Meet resident Sid Ford digs in his crates to pay homage to an enduring musical icon. Here’s what Sid had to say about the mix, “Gil Scott-Heron is a colossus that stands proudly astride the gates of soul, funk, jazz and hip hop. With that in mind it was hard to know what to include and what to leave out. But I started knowing one thing – that my aim was not an attempt to do the definitive mix. To my ears there are already exist two outstanding GSH mixes – the Kirk Degiorgio tribute on RBMA and the JJ Smoking Session on Six Million Steps. If you don’t already know these two mixes I urge you to have a listen. Rather than compete with those, this mix is an attempt to show his jazzier side. So, there are no obvious big-hitters in here. No Bottle, no Revolution. But hopefully what there is you will enjoy. His passing was a tragedy but, luckily for us, his musical legacy lives on.”
