Resident DJ Sid Ford in the booth this week with a session chock full of funky flute and drum action. First up, Lloyd McNeill leads a heavyweight line up on the excellent ‘Griot’ before Jeremy Steig let’s rip on the stunning soul-jazz piece, ‘Mint Tea’. Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers slow the mood a bit before we get a little ‘Spinning Wheel’ from funky German trio Catch Up. We head to the dance floor with the classic ‘Milestones’ from the Herbie Hancock Trio, before Charlie Rouse and The Afro Soultet funk things up a little, and the masterful Tubby Hayes gives us ‘Finky Minky’. Phil Upchurch hits us with some solid guitar led grooves, Kathryn Moses gives up more up-tempo sounds with ‘Lucky Duck’ before Ronald Snijders rounds off the mix with some Latin inflected ‘Latinetta‘. Thanks for listening.

Podcast #55 – 20.02.12 Sampsa Vilhunen (Wahoo!)
And so to our next treat, and this one is a DEEP one. Sampsa Vilhunen is a record collector, DJ and marine biologist based in Helsinki, Finland who has amassed a massive collection of black rhythm music: jazz, soul, funk, disco and Latin over the past 20 years. Over the years, he has participated in many a club night in his native land, the most famous of which being ‘Wahoo!’. Alongside the night, there is also the Wahoo! radioshow which can be found at http://www.samurai.fm/wahoo with already more than 5000 tunes in the mix archive. Despite his many digging and DJ exploits, jazz is certainly never far from his heart (and turntable!), and here he presents to us a few of his current favourites and new discoveries over 45 minutes of some very rare records from the length and breadth of Europe. We hope you enjoy this little guest mix for what promises to be another stellar addition to the Jazz Meet archive. We thank Sampsa, and of course you for listening! Until next week.

A 12 hour hour history lesson on spiritual jazz, from it’s loose origins in 1957 right through to the present day, selected and mixed by our friend Black Classical. Black Classical History Of Spiritual Jazz 1955-2012
There’s been a slow but steady resurgence in the interest of the deep spiritual jazz sound of the 1960s and 1970s, as more and more record labels strive to find and reissue obscure private press and long out of print works to meet the insatiable tastes of record collectors and modern-day music historians. Labels like London’s Jazzman Records and Universal Sound imprints, the Parisian Heavenly Sweetness, and Porter Records based out of Wisconsin, USA have all recently put out compilations or completely remastered releases of long-lost (or highly sought after) records that remain relevant in a genre that often is deemed to have lost its way.
Of course, there’s still a long way to go in this excavation process, and there’s certainly still a veritable treasure trove of rare material out there ready to be rediscovered by a new generation, the only barrier to which seems to be the hefty Popsike quoted prices that many of these first issue, limited run vinyl releases fetch on the likes of eBay. Luckily, however, we have the man Black Classical on hand to shine a little light into that chest with this mammoth 12 hour selection of spiritual jazz music, curated from his collection and featuring an absolutely astounding number of artists and tracks from this most in-demand of sub-genres. Anyone aware of his mixes (some of which you can find on this very site) and past radio shows for Space Invader Radio, know’s the man doesn’t mess about when it comes to selecting and here he compiles a history of jazz from 1957 right through to the present day. Peep the tracklist below and then either immerse yourself in the stream or wait for your download to finish. Either way you’re unlikely to be disappointed.
