Resident DJ Sid Ford in the booth this week with a session chock full of funky flute and drum action. First up, Lloyd McNeill leads a heavyweight line up on the excellent ‘Griot’ before Jeremy Steig let’s rip on the stunning soul-jazz piece, ‘Mint Tea’. Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers slow the mood a bit before we get a little ‘Spinning Wheel’ from funky German trio Catch Up. We head to the dance floor with the classic ‘Milestones’ from the Herbie Hancock Trio, before Charlie Rouse and The Afro Soultet funk things up a little, and the masterful Tubby Hayes gives us ‘Finky Minky’. Phil Upchurch hits us with some solid guitar led grooves, Kathryn Moses gives up more up-tempo sounds with ‘Lucky Duck’ before Ronald Snijders rounds off the mix with some Latin inflected ‘Latinetta‘. Thanks for listening.

Podcast #50 – 25.01.12 Sid Ford presents File Under Jazz: The Funky Kind
This week we’re proud to present this little selection from resident Sid Ford. Originally mixed, pressed and distributed to promote ‘File Under Jazz’, a Shoreditch jazz night Sid started back in 2006, this awesome CD has been dug up from the archives for another airing. Chock full of soulful, funky jazz numbers aimed straight at the talcum powdered dancefloor, it’s a worthy contender for our (official) 50th cloudcast and we hope you enjoy discovering (or rediscovering!) the rare grooves inside. Johnny Frigo, Joe Henderson, Cold Blood, Shirley Scott, Bobby Bryant and Doug Carn are just some of the names featured on the tracklist but believe us when we say all the music is top-notch. There’s a 2nd mix in the series that we may track down in the future, but for the meantime, enjoy this little gem and if you’re in London this Sunday, pop into The Shoreditch, E1 to catch the man himself and fellow resident Jarred Rice holding down the decks while The Jazz Meet Band play their own unique brand of live jazz from 5pm.

Podcast #47 – 06.01.12 Jarred Rice
Our first (second?) mix of 2012 is an absolute killer. We’ve had some great mixes over the past year, but this one is up there with the best so far – whether it gets the props we guess is up to you guys! Jazz Meet resident Jarred Rice is a maniac record collector. He regularly travels to far off places and doesn’t return until he brings back a bag or two full of untold gems, and here he is again blending another hour-long vinyl only set of funky fusion and jazz rock flavours. This isn’t your standard bebop affair so be warned, Jarred digs deep to bring you some serious moments of extreme musicianship from the farther reaches of the jazz spectrum, but it sure is funky! We hope you enjoy the sounds and you can catch Jarred alongside special guests Alan McKinnon, Emanative and Max O’Donnell’s Jazz, Roots and Grooves playing live later today at The Shoreditch, E1 for our first Jazz Meet Live session of the year. Thanks for listening!

Podcast #39 – 19.10.11 Jazz Attitudes Soundsystem
This week we’re blessed with a guest mix from the Parisian Jazz collective, Jazz Attitudes. Over the past few years, Psycut (Edit / Bab Musique), KoKo (Edit / Boull A One Crew) and Switch “Groov” Exp (Bab Musique) have organised some damn fine parties promoting dancefloor jazz culture. So when they contacted us earlier this month, it seemed only right that we show them a little love right here, particularly as Jazz Meet resident Nik Weston will be headlining their next party on Thursday 10 November at Le Java in the 10eme Arrondissement. Peep the flyers below.
Here the three DJ/promoters bring us a mix in three parts. Each focuses on tracks that feature a specific instrument only (Sax, guitar and piano respectively), and together the boys produce a delicious blend of jazz beats and treats. There’s lots of goodness to be had across the full 60 minutes, but the question we have to ask is how did we go 44 episodes without ever featuring Herbie Hancock’s ‘Nobu’?? Finally… here it is! Stream and download below. Enjoy.

Podcast #32d – 23.08.11 Dom Servini (Wah Wah 45s) Live at The Jazz Meet
Mix #4 rears it’s head and after yesterday’s little diversion into Latin and Brazilian territory from Jake Holloway, we delve right back into the jazz. Recorded live at last Sunday’s Jazz Meet Fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support, this time around Wah Wah 45s label boss Dom Servini steps up to the tables and as you’d expect, doesn’t disappoint. Pulling from a catalogue of music spanning the last 60 years, Dom drops newness from Zara McFarlane and the Hackney Colliery Band, and blends it with such classics from Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gary Bartz, Dizzy Gillespie and Sail-Joia. Oh and he even includes one of our favourite records in the form of the Ed Kelly Ensemble‘s mesmerizing ‘Samba‘. Result!
Listen up and if you haven’t checked the other four mixes in the series, seek them out as well. Then please help us do something great for charity and pop a couple of quid in our collection box over at our  JustGiving page. Thanks for passing through.
