Ahead of our Herbie Hancock special at The Jazz Meet next Sunday, the residents dip into their respective record bags to offer this little precursor to the event. With a taste of what’s to come, Rob, Sid and Jarred pull out some of the crazy covers from the influential pianist’s back catalogue of compositions and throw down an exclusive 55 minute mix. Kicking off with ‘Maiden Voyage’ from The Third Wave, versions of ‘Canteloupe Island’ and ‘Blind Man, Blind Man’ soon follow before we head into deeper waters with Rickey Kelley’s vibetastic ‘Dolphin Dance’ and The Sam Houston High School Stage Band funky ‘Fat Mama’. There’s further rareness in the form of Kaatee Frits Quartet’s ‘Cameleon’ before Woody Herman hits his big band stride with ‘Sandia Chicano (Watermelon Man)’ and Shingo Okudaira drops a KILLER version of ‘The Eyes of the Hurricane’. We round things off with a veritable dancefloor bomb from Mark Murphy and a little Japanese jazz funk from Kimiko Kasai and the man himself!
