For this Sunday’s Jazz Meet session we have not one, but two very special guests. On stage we welcome back the wonderful voice of renowned vocalist Heidi Vogel, while on the DJ tip, we also anticipate the return of Little Miss Sunshiine herself, Orsii who once again joins us at Floripa to drop two sets of killer jazz business. If there’s one thing we already know, it’s that Orsii knows her vinyl. As Senior Manager of Fat City Records and the person that takes care of the Jazzman Records online store, she’s surrounded by the stuff and with a musical education influenced by the likes of Gilles Peterson (from her time working at Brownswood), Black Classical and of course, Jazzman Gerald, she’s amassed a pretty tasty collection of awesome jazz herself. A keen radio broadcaster, she’s a popular personality on Mixcloud and alongside Gerald, also co hosts the monthly Jazzman Records radio show on Dalston’s NTS Radio. For someone so busy (and we haven’t even mentioned the DJing, blogging and running!), we were delighted when she agreed to make her third appearance at The Jazz Meet. So to tide us over till Sunday, here’s the customary lucky dip inside her record box, to see exactly what she may have up her sleeve for us. Check out her 5 picks below:

Don Rendell & Ian Carr – Ursula
I wanted to share the Michael Garrick version but couldn’t find it on YouTube. Regardless though, this is still a beautiful version and I picked it because it’s my favourite song named after me 😉 (yes my real name is Ursula – Orsolya if you want the OG spelling)
Antithesis – Haze’s Dance
Amazing modal jazz that we featured on Spiritual Jazz Vol.3. It’s one of those tracks that has you locked throughout and I would love to play in public but probably never will – at least not in full since the original version heard here is around 18 minutes!
Neil Ardley with Norma Winstone – After Long Silence / She Weeps Over Rahoon
I forgot how much I love this song! The vocals are magical and I love how the instruments really add and lift the song rather than suffocating the piece. It feels like you’re whisked away into this super sad fairytale when listening to it.

Sambrasa Trio – Lamento Nortista
On a happier note, this is one of my favourites tracks at the moment and I’m not even a very big Latin Jazz fan. But when they kick off around 1.22 minutes into the song and it completely changes, I can feel my heart start racing because I get so excited about how absolutely fucking genius it is!!!
Jef Gilson – Suite Pour San Remo Ouverture
And then I just had to include this! One of my all time favourite artists, the late great Jef Gilson. The best of compilation we put out on Jazzman Records was one of the first projects I worked on and I had the incredible honour of getting my vinyl copy signed for my birthday by Mr Gilson before he sadly passed away. This is one of my favourite tracks off the compilation and we will be releasing an amazing box set on Jazzman soon with only unreleased Gilson material that I’m very very excited about!

Join us at The Jazz Meet this Sunday to discover what other jazz treats Orsii might have in her DJ bag as she lines up alongside resident Rob Coley behind the Floripa decks. She’ll be kicking off proceedings from 5pm sharp with the first of two sets, just in time for you to enjoy the happy hour cocktails and any last rays of the weekend sunshine. The house band (led by Jake Telford) and Ms Vogel take the stage from 7pm (or weather permitting, head to the terrace for a little alfresco action) before Rob takes us through to closing with a little two-hour club jazz and Latin session.
